Rachel's Challenge
Rachel’s Challenge exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999. Through her example, Rachel’s Challenge is making a positive impact in the lives of millions of people every year.

Superintendents, principals, teachers, parents, and students bring Rachel’s Challenge into their schools because of escalating problems such as: bullying, student isolation, teen suicide, discrimination, school violence, and increased disciplinary actions. Through powerful presentations, trainings, community events, and professional development, Rachel’s Challenge provides the sustainable solution.

Rachel’s inspiring story provides a simple, yet powerful example of how small acts of kindness and acceptance motivate us to consider our relationships with the people we come in contact with every day. Rachel’s Challenge renews our hope that our life has meaning and purpose. Rachel’s story gives us permission to start our own chain reaction of kindness and compassion, which positively affects the climate in our schools and communities.

Rachel's Challenge - Awaken the Learner - All day session
Inspired by Rachel Scott's vision to create a chain reaction of kindness and compassion, this program enhances the caring and supportive learning environment of schools, essential for academic achievementAwaken the Learner motivates and inspires every learner in the educational community.

We believe that school culture and its social relationship with its students and educational community are foundational to academic achievement. It gives the students and educators what they need to collaborate, grow, learn and support one another. Said another way, Awaken the Learner gives your school the tools and the process road map to get there; making this your process to get to your answer.

W-EPS: The Beak--A Work in Progress
In the fall of 2017, some senior boys who were struggling with their schedules challenged me to come up with a new elective for the spring semester that would interest them. Considering that I possess an endorsement in journalism that had long been dormant, a media class seemed to be the answer. However, as I began to describe the wonderful world of news writing to them, I could see they did not share my enthusiasm--more writing wasn't exactly what they had in mind. As a result, we found a middle ground--Broadcast Journalism. And that, my friends, is how W-EPS: The Beak was born. It's been a fulfilling journey that has provided endless opportunities for both the students and myself.

Teaching the Brain Part 1: What does science tell us?
This session will examine the ways in which the brain acquires and retains information to help teachers set goals and target instruction for retention.  We all know repetition helps students remember, but why?  The environment of your classroom, the level of your voice, scents, small motor skills, and more ---  all of these things provide "hooks" on which student "hang" information.  The session is based on research from DANA Foundation for brain research and dozens of other scientific studies.

Resilience Training for Educators
The purpose of this presentation is to give stake holders in schools the opportunity to know more about resilience training that is available through the NDE. This brief overview will provide a glimpse at the 3-hour training that the presenters as well as other trained personnel can offer schools.

It is important for all stake holders in schools to stay healthy emotionally, physically, and psychologically. As part of giving professions, members of a school often focus all their efforts in helping others and often forget about their own needs. It is very common to experience compassion fatigue, especially following natural disasters such as floods, bomb cyclones, and tornadoes. This becomes more critical as students return to school and as many continue to recover from the natural disasters Nebraska endured this year. Students are counting on their school to be a place of recovery following any trauma they may have experienced during the summer. This training will provide you with information on the danger of compassion fatigue. You will learn self-care strategies that will allow you to be emotionally and physically well in order to provide proper and effective care to students and staff. This training will also will teach you to be an effective responder that aids in the emotional and psychological recovery efforts following a disaster or traumatic event.

Rachel's Challenge - Community Event

This community event is appropriate for grades 7-12 as well as adults.
